World coffee production in the 2018-2019 season reached 174.5 million bags weighing 60 kilograms, with Arabica coffee totalling 104 million bags, or 60% of the total number while Robusta coffee accounted for 70.5 million, equivalent to 40%.
This total volume was 9.8% higher than the previous crop season in 2017-2018, which recorded a total production of 158.9 million bags, comprising 94.5 million bags of Arabica coffee and 64.4 million bags of Robusta.
Brazil ranked first in terms of total coffee production, harvesting a total of 61.6 million bags, or 35.3% of the global total while Vietnam ranked second with 29 million bags, representing 16.6% of the global total. Colombia ranked third with 14.3 million bags or 8.2%. It should be noted that Colombia only produces Arabica coffee and Vietnam only produces Robusta.
The data used in this study of world coffee production came from the “Coffee Executive Summary-August 2019,” published by the Secretariat of Agricultural Policy (SPA) of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), which is available at the “Observatory Coffee Consortium Research Café,” managed by Embrapa Coffee . Other monthly editions of this summary have been available at the Observatory since April 2013, which was called the “Coffee Statistical Report” until December 2016.
In order to analyze the study and create a comprehensive ranking of the six major coffee producing countries for the 2017-2018 crop year, data from the “International Coffee Organization (ICO) Historical Data-Total Production” recorded a global coffee production total of 158.6 million bags weighing 60 kilograms, similar to the figures previously stated with Brazil ranking first with 51 million bags, equivalent to 32.2% of yearly production.
Vietnam came in second place with 29 million bags, or 18.6% while Colombia came in third place with 14 million bags or 8.8%. Indonesia came in fourth place with 10.9 million bags, or 6.9%, followed by Honduras with 8.3 million bags, or 5.3%, then Ethiopia with 7.6 million bags, or 4.8%.
With regards to Brazilian coffee, the Coffee Executive Summary-August 2019 also provides data that enabled the establishment to compare the production and productivity of Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee (Conilon).
During the current 2019 harvest season, Arabica coffee crops cover an area of 1.47 million hectares, with an estimated production capacity of 37 million bags weighing 60 kilograms and a productivity rate of 25.2 bags per hectare while Robusta coffee crops cover an area of 373,300 hectares, producing 13.9 million bags with a productivity rate of 37.4 bags per hectare. According to the data, Brazilian production in 2019 is expected to reach 50.5 million bags in an area of 1.84 million hectares, with a productivity rate of 27.4 bags per hectare.
